Zero Alarm Chili Recipe

by katie

I really like chili, but I just can’t eat spicy food! If you’re like me, then you’ll love this recipe. This is also good for kids’ lunches! The reason I love this recipe so much is because it doesn’t take a lot of time to make. In about 15 minutes, you’ll have the perfect hot dog topper or side dish.

This recipe couldn’t be simpler! Start with gathering your ingredients. This recipe originally calls for a small batch. In these images, I’ve simply doubled the amount to make for dinner. For a single batch, you’ll need 1/2 pound of either ground turkey or beef, 1 teaspoon of oregano, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 1/8 teaspoon of cumin, 8 ounce can of tomato sauce (not to be confused with pasta sauce) and a vegetable of your choice.
The original recipe calls for tomatoes (2 medium tomatoes to be exact), but I’ve opted this time to use green peppers. You can choose whichever you’d like. I also like to throw a dash or two of chili powder. I don’t eat spicy food at all, but this will give it a little bit of something. 🙂
Start by cooking the turkey or beef. In the pictures, I am using ground turkey. Don’t forget to drain the grease before you add to your chili sauce.
In a sauce pan, add tomato sauce, spices and vegetable together. Allow to heat up and simmer for about 5 minutes or until (in this case) the green peppers start to soften.
Add your ground meat to the sauce pan and simmer until fully heated through and vegetable is tender.
Top your hot dogs with this chili or eat it alone! Delicious! I paired it with homemade pasta salad. You can find my recipe for it HERE.
Stay in the loop!

Oh yum! That looks good. I didn't start using cumin until last year. Forty years in the kitchen and that one slipped by me.

I didn't use Cumin until about a year ago when I started making my own taco seasoning. You're definitely not alone!

Cumin is such a great seasoning! I have an intolerance for super spicy foods, so I'll definitely have to give this a go 🙂 Thank you for sharing with Friday Favorites, we love having you 😀

This could easily be a base for your chili and then add more! I did it the last time I made it and it came out great!
