Tip Tuesday: Need-To-Know Nail Hacks

I’m back to share some tips with you. This week’s tip Tuesday: need-to-know nail hacks will help you get the perfect mani at home. Quarantine has left the majority of us without being able to get our nails done. For a lot of us, we’re still not able to make appointments. Grab yourself your go-to nail supplies and read these quick tips.

Tip #1: Removing Polish

When you go to remove your nail polish, remember to hydrate your cuticles with a cuticle oil first. This hydrates the surrounding skin to prevent dryness. Once you’ve removed your nail polish, apply the cuticle oil to your nail beds as well.

Your nails are prone to dryness when using harsh chemicals like acetone. This will help to also strengthen your nails as dry nails tend to break a lot faster than moisturized nails.

Tip #2: Filing

It’s important to know how to file your nails. Filing them the wrong way could cause them to break faster! When you’re trying to cut your nails, avoid using a nail trimmer. This causes small hairline fractures in the nail that will cause them to break even if you can’t see them.

Instead, file them down using a good nail file such as this glass nail file. File back and forth until you get your desired shape. Then, file in one direction.

Why can’t you file them back and forth and then leave them be?

Well, your nails are fibrous which means that filing them back and forth and then leaving them leaves jagged fibers. Finishing in one direction will stop the “fraying” of the fibers and make the edge smooth and resistant to tears and breakage.

Tip #3: Keep Them Covered

Keeping any sort of polish on your nails helps to protect them. Start with a base coat, then the polish (2-3 depending on the polish you’re using), and then a top coat to seal it all in. Investing in a good top coat like this one will help prevent chipping and make your manicure last longer!

One thing to note is that if you don’t like wearing polish (or can’t because of your job), try applying a clear coat. This will help protect your nails and also add a bit of shine!

For some reason, I never do anything with my fingernails. But I do love pretty toenails! Great tips!
