Organized Shoe Storage: A Tutorial

by katie

Today I am excited to share with you a project that I’ve been planning since I cleaned out my closet and I was finally able to get it done. A week or so ago I posted the before and after of my newly organized closet. (If you didn’t get the chance to check out my closet organization post, click here.) Before I cleaned and organized my closet, I was wondering how I could store my shoes. Ultimately, I did it anyway and now I found myself looking around at various stores online. All I really saw were these plastic storage bins. (Pictured below.) They’re nothing special…at all. Besides that,  spending $35 on 6 storage containers seemed absolutely absurd!

Then I had an epiphany! I had an old nightstand in my closet that I already used to store my flip flops and sandals. Since they were in the drawer, I thought the cubby underneath would be the perfect spot to store them.I decided to use shoe boxes I already had and some shelf liner. And here’s where it gets good! Lol. I only spent $4 on this project! That’s right! I only spent $4 on the shelf liner since I had everything else.  Not too shabby, right? Anyway, here’s my tutorial below.

 Here’s What You’ll Need:

Shelf Liner or Wrapping Paper

Razor (optional)

Shoe Boxes (as many as you need)
Here’s What To Do:
Cut the liner to fit the box like you would when gift wrapping allowing enough to be folded over to the inside.
Start by applying the liner to one of the longer sides. Once at the top of the box, cut a slit on both sides so you can neatly fold over the excess. Repeat on both sides.

You will have extra at the ends-pictured on the left. Here you’ll see that I removed the extra liner with scissors on the right.
Then cut down the side of the box so you get it to lay flat. You’ll then be able to fold it up and over like the longer sides. Wrap the extra on each side around the corner.

This is what they will look like after.

Now, roughly 12 pairs of shoes that used to crowd and clutter my closet floor now are kept neat and organized.
Did I mention that, compared to those storage containers,  I saved $31? That’s right! A whopping $4 on a roll of shelf liner and I have my shoe organization. Oh, and my wallet’s happy, too!
Maybe buy another pair to add to the collection? Hmmm….

🙂 That's the same contact paper I used to recover an old kids table that was pretty icky.

It's a pretty design. I love the shade of green.
