How To Link Up: Joining A Link Party

by The Organized Dream

I’m asked all the time what a link party is whether I’m sharing my weekly Make Life Pretty Monday Link party or posting various blogging information and so I thought I’d put it all in one post for everyone’s easy reference.

What is a link party?

A link party is when a blogger decides to choose a particular day to invite everyone to share a post or two on their blog. Each party has different guidelines or rules. Some bloggers host parties particular to their niche such as beauty, crafting, children, DIY, etc. This is something to pay attention to when looking for parties because you don’t want to link to your DIY post to a party about recipes. Other bloggers offer link parties with no particular niche in mind. Link parties are a great way to gain followers, visitors and inspiration for your blog.

Basic guidelines you may come across:

  • Don’t link and run! -It doesn’t help either you or the person hosting for you to link your posts and leave. The whole point of a link party is to meet new people, find new things and gain inspiration.
  • Visit a certain amount of people! -Some bloggers will say that you should visit a certain amount of people whether it’s the first two people ahead of you or a few people in general.
  • Grab a button! -Bloggers create buttons or icons with their blog and party’s logo on it to raise awareness of their party. Grabbing their button and placing it on your post you’ve shared lets your readers know about it and possibly join themselves. If you prefer not to place this button on your post, you can create a page to share them all. I have a link up page with parties I join categorized by day. This will also help people looking for parties! Just remember, this may be a major thing for some bloggers when it comes to deciding who gets featured in the next week’s party.
  • Follow the host! -Most bloggers request that you follow them. You don’t have to but it is a great way to show support and get reminders of parties.

How do I link up?

There are two different types of link parties I’ve come across. One hosted by Inlinkz and the other by Linky Tools. I prefer Inlinkz because I feel like it’s easier to use especially when you’re adding multiple posts.
When you visit a party, look for link buttons typically found below the previously linked posts by other party-goers. Let’s start with Inlinkz.

Look for the bright blue icon below the other links.
Clicking the ‘Add Your Link’ button will bring you to their page where you input your information.
On this page, you will share your post’s url, a short description (character amount is chosen at the host’s discretion), your email and then a few different options on places to choose an image. Where the little blue frog is now would be where your image will appear. You can crop an image to your liking before finishing. After you’re done, it will bring you to a page with different share buttons, a link to bring you back to the blog or the option to share another post (which is my favorite feature!). Remember, sharing is caring. Throwing a quick tweet about the party is a nice way of saying ‘thank you’ for hosting. 🙂

Linky Tools

There is a simple bold link to look for at the bottom of the previous links. To me, it’s sometimes hard to spot.
Click the ‘Click Here to Enter’ link. This will bring you to their page to share your information you want linked.
This is similar to Inlinkz where you share the url, caption (length also set by host), email, name and where you’d like to get your image from (computer, web, etc.). If you chose ‘The Web’, you will be brought to new page with images found on the url you used. Select the one you would like to be used and crop to fit. Upon completion, it will bring you to a page with share buttons and a link back to the blog hosting the party.
There isn’t anything else to do after that! Your links automatically appear on the blog hosting the party and you’re on your way to having people visit you!
Don’t forget to return to the blog hosting and visit a few others! There are a lot of great projects out there. Commenting a ‘Thanks for hosting!’ or a ‘Great party! Happy to join!’ in the comment section of the party is great also.

What happens if I’m featured?

I’ve been featured quite a few times and I like it because of the recognition. Everyone loves to know that people like what they put out there! I’m not ashamed to admit it.
When you’re featured, sometimes the host will contact you to let you know and sometimes they don’t. If you visit the parties weekly, you’ll see your post in the featured. When you’re featured, it’s good to add a quick comment thanking the host for choosing you to be featured. The best part of being featured is the extra traffic you gain. People will see the large image of your post and be more apt to clicking and viewing.
I hope I’ve answered everyone’s questions, but if I haven’t, leave them below. I’ll be happy to get back to you!
Thanks for visiting!

Great to see this post as many new bloggers are a bit unsure of how linkups work. I found you on #merrymondaylinkup , I do like finding new friends.

Thanks so much for the great Link Up tips. I also try to follow on social media anyone that I find thru a Link Up as well as leave a comment as you mentioned. I just started a brand new Link Up and would love to have you stop by. 🙂

Thanks sooo much. I really didn't understand linkups as a newbie. This was very helpful. I really like the idea of a page for buttons. Your organizing into days is great. I did not realize we were to grab a button. I thought that was only if featured. Thanks again.

You're welcome, Nancy! Glad to help!

These are very good examples. I have joined several linky parties and find them quite rewarding.

I just started doing them religiously. Before I was only joining a few a week. I can definitely see the rewards in doing this!

Great tips! I like the idea of a page for link parties. There are so many that linking each post individually can be overwhelming and most hosts don't mind. Thanks for sharing on Merry Monday.

Thank you, Rachel. It was so hard to link back my posts to all of the parties I was joining. This has helped me so much!

Thanks for good and useful tips! The idea of a page for buttons is very interesting.

Many greetings from Russia.

Hi, Svetlana! Thank you for stopping by all the way from Russia! 🙂 A page for buttons is pretty much a necessity with you join so many parties and I simply link them to the host's blog with a simple Inlinkz tool!
