Festive Fall Lantern Project & Decor

by katie

I’ve had this lantern in my room and wanted to do something with it as part of my Fall decorating this year. I decided that I was going to incorporate a lot of simple outside elements in it so it can be for the entire Fall season and I won’t have to change it after Halloween.

This project was super inexpensive. With only having to purchase the ribbon and the cinnamon sticks, it cost me under $2! I gathered the pinecones with my daughter a few weeks ago. Curious on how I cleaned them? My recent post will show you how to Clean and Dry Pinecones for this and any other craft you want to do. We also collected leaves and I preserved them for decorating. I will have a tutorial on how to do this in an upcoming post so stay tuned! The pumpkin is fake and was borrowed from a different arrangement in my living room. Anyway, here’s my Fall lantern project.

I gathered all of my materials.

I love pops of red so I opted to choose some of the red leaves I preserved to show contrast against the brown pinecones.

This package of cinnamon sticks cost me 79 cents at my local grocery store and were the perfect size. If you buy the longer ones, depending on the size of your lantern, you may need to cut to fit.

This is a side view to show the leaves. I also chose to add some greenery at the last minute.
This is the result after painstakingly positioning the pinecones, cinnamon sticks and leaves. They didn’t want to stay still! To accent the top of the lantern, I simply snipped a long strand of ribbon and tied it in a bow. I cut the ends into a fork shape because I like the look better. I didn’t want anything too extravagant. I’ve seen some pretty gorgeous bows in other people’s projects, but I didn’t have the time nor do I think I have the talent to pull it off so to prevent frustration, I left it at this.

Here is a little look into other decor around my home. I normally try not to decorate too much for Fall. I like to keep things simple. Christmas, however, is a whole other story. It ends up looking like Santa threw up….in a good way, I hope. 🙂 I guess you’ll just have to wait and see on that, though!

Thanks for joining me today. I hope you’re having as much fun with Fall as I am. Don’t forget to keep a look out for my tutorial on how to preserve leaves and on upcoming Halloween posts!…Better yet, come subscribe to my newsletter! You can do so HERE!

Your lantern turned out beautifully! I have 3 of those style lanterns that sit on my front porch. I think I'll try this to make them festive for fall.
