Dollar Store Moss Topiary DIY

by katie
I love making frugal crafts. This idea was found on Pinterest. I love topiaries and wanted something ‘earthy’ for my living room since I’m changing the color scheme. Today, I’m going to show you how $7 can make a cute accent to your living space.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

First let’s start off with what you’ll need. At my local Dollar Tree, there was a good selection of items I needed except for the circular foam balls so I opted to use foam disks I found there. They came in a two-pack so I purchased 2.

What You’ll Need:

  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Bag Tie
  • Sticks/Twigs
  • Foam Balls (Foam disks in my case. You’ll need 2 2-packs.)
  • Foam Cylinders
  • Clay Pots
  • Ribbon (Mine is burlap.)
  • Floral Moss (More or less depending on how big. I used 2 with plenty left over.)

Directions:

Start by gluing the disks together.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Using a knife, shave pieces off to create a ball. If this is the way you’re making your topiaries, make sure they’re roughly the same size and shape but the surfaces don’t have to be completely smooth. They’ll get covered in moss so no one will notice. 🙂
Next, taper the foam cylinders with a knife so that they fit into the clay pots.
Then, cut the foam to fit flush against the top of the pot and used some shavings to fill in the spaces to keep it balanced since the cylinders weren’t wide enough. I chose sticks I liked that were roughly the same size and poked them into the center of the foam. I used two sticks per topiary. You can use one or more if you’d like.
Because I was using two, I twisted them gently together and used a bag tie to hold them in place.
After placing moss in a large bowl, cover the balls with glue and press the moss onto them. Fill in any bare spots along the way.
After they’re covered, push them down on the sticks. Cover foam in the pots the same way as the balls. Use scissors to trim moss sticking out to make a uniformed, tailored shape.
I chose a burlap ribbon that I originally intended to tie around the pots but it was too wide! I tied bows around the sticks instead and can remove them after Easter.
Here’s the finished look! I’ve placed them in my living room and I’m loving them! I’ll have a post featuring them coming up soon!
Don’t you love inexpensive crafts? Do you have anything crafty planned this Spring?
Stay in the loop!

Super cute! My kids and cats would tear them apart, though. 🙁 Maybe someday I can have nice things. (and yes, dollar store crafts are my favorite!)

You'd totally be surprised! I've found so much there that you'd pay so much more for and the quality isn't that bad for only $1!

What a clever Topiary, I think I could even make these, I need to change up my mantel for spring and these would work well. Just need those round Styrofoam bases.
This would be a perfect post o share on our WW, hope you can find your way over.
