In this post I’m going to show you a simple way to clean and “de-bug” those Pinecones you see everywhere. Why buy them when you can do it yourself?
Start by collecting them. My daughter and I went to our local park. This is an awesome place to look because you can find so many in different sizes. Once you have what you want, follow the steps below.
Get all of the Pinecones you’ve collected and preheat your oven to 250F.
*Quick Tip: Place the bag in your sink. It prevents creepy-crawlies everywhere. YUCK! 🙂
Space them out on a cookie sheet pan lined with foil in a single layer and bake for 35 minutes. You’ll start to get that “Piney” smell in your home. (Some love it, some hate it. I kind of liked it.) You’ll also notice your Pinecones open up. They look so pretty!
*Important: Make sure you stay in the kitchen while they bake. Better safe than sorry. 🙂
After I removed them from the oven, I ran them under warm water to remove the dirt and debris. This will remove dirt clumps, dead insects and anything else that may be in them. I wrapped a couple of cooling racks with aluminum foil and placed them out to dry. I’d allow 2 days for drying.
*Note: I noticed they started to close up which I wasn’t expecting. I associate this with getting them wet. After letting them fully dry, they opened up again so I was happy with the end result.
In no time, you’ll have clean, gorgeous Pinecones to decorate your home or use in your next craft project. The best thing about this? They last and can be used in your Christmas decor as well!
